Why Real Madrid will let Jovic to go for free to Fiorentina for €60 million

With Luka Jovic, a 24-year-old striker, due to join Fiorentina on a free transfer, Real Madrid is prepared to cut their losses with the player in the most dramatic way possible.

The Serbian international will reportedly sign with the Serie A team for free, despite having joined Madrid from Eintracht Frankfurt in the summer of 2019 for €60 million.

Despite still having three years remaining on his contract, Jovic has fallen well short of the expectations placed on him at the Bernabeu.

But because of how terrible his performances have been, he will be free to go.
Jovic’s failure at Real Madrid was somewhat foreseeable. Despite dominating for Frankfurt in the 2018–19 campaign, he punched above his weight by scoring 27 goals in 48 games across all competitions, solidifying himself as a future superstar of European football. In fact, he was only valued at €13.5 million by FootballTransfers in July 2019, which is less than half of what Real Madrid spent for him.

However, Los Blancos made significant investments in the attacker, who was tipped to succeed Cristiano Ronaldo in the Spanish capital. Instead, he scored only three goals in 51 games for the team, and he quickly lost favor, which led to his return to Frankfurt for the second half of the 2020–21 season. Within the span of only 18 games, he scored four goals.

Why are they not willing to stick with him given that his Real Madrid contract still has three years left?

Real Madrid’s strategic risk-taking
According to Marca, Jovic’s pay is the problem here. He has a large salary of almost €10 million per season. They are saving themselves €30m by letting him depart on the house’s dime.

They are also giving a middle-tier team the opportunity to sign him by releasing him from his contract. This is necessary since his performances in Madrid rendered him poisonous in the eyes of Europe’s top players.

However, clubs like Fiorentina are unable to pay both a high transfer price and high salaries for such players, so by essentially waiving the latter, they are enabling the Serie A team to pay the player the expected salary, making him more eager to join.

Real Madrid are basically cutting their losses on one of the worst bargains in the club’s history by allowing Jovic to walk to Fiorentina and admitting they made a massive error.
