Christian Pulisic’s goal helped Charlotte FC, a newcomer to the MLS, defeat the Blues on penalties in a match in which Raheem Sterling made his Chelsea debut.

Chelsea, though, had recently defeated the Mexican team Club America 2-1 and was taking part in their second game of their USA Tour.

Just after the half-hour mark, American captain Pulisic scored by expertly clipping the ball over Charlotte goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina after a Michy Batshuayi shot bounced in his direction.

In the second half, both teams made various alterations, and Sterling eventually made his Chelsea debut.

With a number of exciting runs and forward plays, the 27-year-old created an impact and gave Chelsea supporters something to cheer about in the next season.
Kai Havertz slipped Sterling in behind the Charlotte defense seven minutes from time, and it may have been the Englishman’s fairytale debut. Sterling attempted to score with his left foot, but Pablo Sisniega, the replacement goalie, made a good stop.

In the 90th minute, MLS opponent Daniel Rios’ penalty kick was successful, giving the Blues their second straight victory on American soil.

After the game, there was an unplanned penalty shootout, in which Charlotte won 5-3 on kicks after Connor Gallagher missed from the line.

Thomas Tuchel’s squad will play London rivals Arsenal three days from now to wrap off their North American tour. Another summer addition, Kalidou Koulibaly, might make his debut in this game.
