The history of friendship between Demiral and Cristiano Ronaldo

Merih Demiral is set to return to Juventus, but the Bianconeri are open to finding him a new club. The Turkey international might rejoin with Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United: here’s how they met in Turin.

CR7 was seldom seen with his teammates throughout his three-year stay in Turin, but Demiral, along with third-choice goalkeeper Carlo Pinsoglio, was one of his closest pals under the Mole.

At Juventus, Ronaldo and Demiral worked together for three years. Last summer, the Turkey international joined Atalanta on a season-long loan with the option to buy, while Ronaldo returned to Manchester United with a bang. Demiral was the first to depart, and Ronaldo paid him a visit before the defender packed his belongings and moved to Bergamo.
Following his return to Manchester United at the end of August, Demiral sent a social media message to his pal.

“It was a joy to collaborate with you. It will always be special to be a part of your narrative. My brother, I wish you the best of luck in your new life. On Instagram, he remarked, “See you at the Champions League evenings.”

They ultimately met in the Champions League group stage, and both scored in Manchester United’s 3-2 victory at Old Trafford in October. Ronaldo scored a late winner and two more goals in the rematch in Bergamo, where La Dea held United to a 2-2 draw, but it wasn’t enough for Gian Piero Gasperi’s side to go to the Round of 16 for the third year in a row.

Demiral is proficient in Portuguese, thus he quickly grew close to Ronaldo at Continassa. CR7 was shocked to learn that the defense spoke the same language as him, and the two have stayed friendly both on and off the field.

Following an anterior cruciate ligament injury in January 2020, the Portuguese superstar was one of the first teammates to contact Demiral on Instagram.

“Ronaldo and I are pretty close, he’s always helped me a lot and we regularly communicate on Whatsapp,” Demiral stated after Atalanta was knocked out of the Champions League last December.

“He’s one of the most unique individuals I’ve ever encountered.”

It’s unclear if they’ll reconnect at Old Trafford in the future, but considering their history, both would be thrilled to play together again.
