Report: Eden Hazard has asked the Real Madrid coaches for a position change

Real Madrid and Eden Hazard’s union hasn’t quite gone as planned. When he came in the Spanish capital in 2019, the Belgian was among the finest players in the world, but he has since suffered from a number of ailments and health problems.

To put things in perspective, Hazard has only appeared in 48 La Liga games over the past three seasons, scoring four goals and dishing out six assists. It becomes worse for him since Vinicius Jr. is becoming a bigger part of the squad and plays on the left-wing no less.

After overcoming his most recent injury, Hazard is fully prepared for the 2022–23 campaign. However, as reported by Defensa Central and Sport1, he has asked Carlo Ancelotti and the Madrid coaches to modify his viewpoint.

The former Chelsea player gained notoriety on the left-wing but has requested to play in the center of the field next season as a midfielder, second striker, or no. This will be examined by the coaches throughout the preseason.

There are three potential explanations for this.

The first and most evident one is the rivalry on Madrid’s wings. Vinicius now has control of the left flank, with Rodrygo and Marco Asensio squabbling on the opposite side. In addition, Hazard does not feel especially at ease playing the right flank.

Second, at the age of 31, Hazard has significantly lost pace as a result of many career-threatening injuries. His dribbling may still be deft, but contemporary teams demand that wingers have the terrifying pace to spearhead counterattacks.

Finally, Karim Benzema requires extra attention from Ancelotti in the upcoming campaign. Throughout 2021–2022, the Frenchman competed in four events and occasionally played for the national team, scoring a ton of goals.

The World Cup and club football, though, might make for one of the most demanding seasons for players in the future.

Hazard’s pivotal role and potential use as a false nine will allow Benzema to receive the much-needed rest. The squad may have lost a physical presence in the box with the Belgian up front, but thanks to his technical skill, the assault will continue to flow.

Hazard is not especially new to central roles, anyway. Antonio Conte frequently used him as a false nine, and he has also played a significant amount of time as an attacking midfielder.

It is hard to dispute that Hazard still had the potential to resume his illustrious career if he can put his troublesome recent past behind him.
