Frank McAvennie, a former West Ham striker, has advised Cristiano Ronaldo why he shouldn’t be captain of Manchester United, suggesting that he won’t be there beyond next season. Bruno Fernandes, another Portuguese star at the club, is someone he believes would be “perfect” to succeed Harry Maguire.
Incoming United boss Erik ten Hag has been encouraged to relieve Maguire of the leadership, since he has had a dismal season, and the choice on who will take the armband next might be made by the present team rather than ten Hag. McAvennie told Football Insider, “That’s an odd one.”
“How can you have a vote if they’re listening to those players?” The majority of the players will not be returning next season. Ronaldo is unable to obtain it because he will not be available the next season. Bruno Fernandes, I believe, would have been the ideal character.
“He’d be perfect.” Why should they be able to vote when there are so many players they need to get rid of? If there is a quarrel amongst the players, the manager must make a judgment and stamp his authority.”
Although Fernandes’ form has dipped since Ronaldo’s arrival at Old Trafford, the 27-year-old had a bright start to life in Manchester and has proven to be a strong character since joining from Sporting Lisbon in 2020. After finishing sixth in the Premier League, United will compete in the Europa League next season, and Fernandes has hinted at his aspirations for the next season. “Are you disappointed that you won’t be competing in the Champions League next season?” “If I couldn’t play football, I’d be disappointed,” he told O Jogo. “Of course, everyone wants to play in the Champions League,” says the player.
“I’m in the Europa League, and my goal will be to win when I get there.” I’ve already lost one final and want to win this one.”
Ralf Rangnick’s stay at the club saw the Red Devils struggle, thus he opted to maintain Maguire as captain, but stated why ten Hag may choose to allow the players choose their leader. “I strongly think that the captain should be picked by the squad since he is known as the team manager,” stated Austria’s newly hired manager. “And we always did that in Germany; we had a board of four or five players, which we called the spielkapitan, which was elected by the players, and the person who had the most votes at the end was the team captain.”
“I have to emphasize, next season is a different season,” Ten Hag stated when questioned about Maguire’s future as captain. He’s done a wonderful job, he’s a great player, he’s accomplished a lot and made a significant contribution to Manchester United, so I’m excited to work with him.”
